Who thought there was such a thing as a vagina detox or vaginal steam?
Who even thinks to cleanse their vagina past the routine washes and even douches?
It surprised me the number of women that suffered from various vaginal maladies; from yeast infections
to bacteria vaginosis to prolapse and even STDs. This isan area many women do not want to come out and talk about but feel much safer behind their computer talking about their problems. The vagina is an organ of detox itself. We have a menstrual cycle every month, hormone fluctuations, babies, and a man’s penis to contend with. It amazes me the amount of men and women that expect our vaginas to not go through changes.
As we age, our vaginas need healthy cleansing. Vaginal steam baths, also known as yoni bath, bajos, or chai-yok, is very much a part of indigenous cultures with Korean culture leading this new vaginal revolution here in the United States. You can find professional vaginal steams at Korean spas in most major cities or you can do them yourself. I’ll admit, I did many of these while pregnant. The benefits were too intriguing to pass up.
The benefits include: reducing hormonal cramps or PMS cramps, fights viruses, infections, aids in relaxation, fibroids, PCOS, Endometriosis, can increase fertility, helps a baby turn in the right position once the due date gets close, helps to improve hemorrhoids, and will help tone and tighten the vagina. The basis for a vaginal steam is mugwort tea. You will generally find the addition of black walnut and other herbs depending on the reason for your steam.
In a Korean spa you will sit in a chair with a hole in the center that has the steaming herbs rising to cleanse your vagina. You sometimes will have a cape around you to keep the steam in. The vagina will readily absorb the herbal steam. While you won’t read about it in many medical journals, you will find women singing the praises and swearing by vaginal steams.
Now that you have some background, let’s get into some of the particulars of a vagina detox. It is best to do a vagina detox within a week before your period and every 2 weeks to keep up the cleansing. You want to use 1 Quart of purified water with a pinch of Himalayan salt and 1 cup of dried herbs. For an infection, post menstrual or post baby, choose one or two of the following:
- Clove (1 Tablespoon slightly crushed cloves) – do not use while breastfeeding
- Crushed garlic cloves can also be added in the case of a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.
Tonifying and cleansing herbs are:
- Red Raspberry leaf
- Dong Quai
- Witch hazel
- Burdock leaves
How to do a Vagina Detox – Phase 1
Take a cup of herbs and mix it well with 1 Quart of water with a pinch of Himalayan salt. Let sit overnight.
The next morning, bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes. Then let rest, off the heat, for another 20 minutes. Pour the contents in a heavy bowl and put it inside your toilet. Grab a few blankets to wrap around you and undress. Carefully sit on the toilet, wrap up in a blanket and rest for 20 minutes with the vaginal steam.
When the time is up, wrap the blanket around you and either go outside where the sun is shining or wrap up in bed for another 20 minutes.
Ice –Phase 2
The next day you will introduce ice to your perineum area. Heat is healing in phase 1 and ice is healing in phase 2. You can either use the expensive pads that have a onetime use ice pack in them or you can buy a small ice pack. I have found that the boo boo ice packs in the football shape are perfect for this.
Take your ice pack and apply it to your perineum and get dressed with your ice pack in place. You will want to change out your ice pack every couple of hours. You will want to do the phase 2 at least one time a week and always the day after a vaginal steam.
You will quickly see problems leaving as you cleanse your vagina with these vagina detox techniques.
