Detox Drinks – Do They Really Work?

Detox drinks are an easy way to cleanse your body in a more gentle and natural way. Sure, you can take a supplement for cleansing, but no supplement can replace live, whole foods for nourishing and cleansing your body.

Having been on the wellness journey for most of my adult life, I have tried just about everything out there at one point or another to cleanse and detox my body: detox drinks, fasting, mono-diets, cleansing (both gentle and intense). Some things worked like magic and some left me wondering if anything was happening inside my body. It was like nothing changed. detox drinks to cleanse your body naturallyEveryone is at a different level when it comes to their toxic load and a detox diet can be tweaked to be as gentle or intense as you need it to be.

There are many reasons that people, like you, are interested in cleansing drinks. Detox drinks for weight loss are effective and powerful at helping people achieve their fat loss goals. A detox cleanse will usually incorporate juice feasting as a way to purify your body.

Detox Drinks Dilemma – Buy or Make?

Homemade detox drinks are one of the healthiest choices you can make for feeding your body. When you give your body the nutrition it needs from fresh, wholesome ingredients, it will slowly begin to let go of the stored junk that is causing you to age faster, have low energy, have hormone imbalances, and even become ill. Buying detox drinks in a can or bottle, or even juice from a health food store can be iffy. If the juices are made fresh, right in front of you, that’s one thing. If, however, they are made in advance and then sit in the bin all day… stay away! When it comes to cleaning up your body, use the freshest and highest quality that you can.

I am a big proponent of healthy aging. Healthy aging means that chronologically you will still gain years but you do not have what is termed normal aging related symptoms like: aches and pains, flexibility issues, muscle wasting, low energy, dull, wrinkled and dry skin, illnesses, and basically anything that detracts from your vitality and being able to live life to its fullest. You were not made to have to sit on the sidelines watching as life passes you by.

Getting started with detox drinks in your daily life

You can add fresh juices into your daily life for a slower detox or you do a juice fast (where you solely drink juices – no solid food) for 1-3 days. People interested in hard core detoxing or fast weight loss often choose to stay on their detox cleanse for 30 or more days and consume only cleansing drinks. For others, a 3 day detox cleanse is a better place to start. Depending on your goals and your temperament, you can pick what suits you the best.

If you are new to detoxing, I suggest incorporating 1 fresh pressed juice a day into your life for 1 week, then increase the number of juices you are consuming each day. Remember, you will be replacing meals with juice.

The biggest argument against juicing that I have heard is that juicing lacks fiber because the machine extracts out the fiber. WebMD talks about juicing (not really detox drinks, but it’s a start). One good solution they discuss is scooping out some of the vegetable pulp in your juicer and adding that to your juice if you are worried about lacking fiber in your diet due to juicing.

Detox Drinks Recipes

Here are 5 of my top favorites:

* To make these detox drinks at home, you will need a juicer or blender. You can buy an inexpensive juicer and blender to begin your journey instead of starting out with professional models. These recipes fall into the category of how to juice without a juicer. Just blend the ingredients together and strain the pulp through a nut bag or jelly strainer bag.

Sunset Sweetheart

  • ½ red beet

  • 3 carrots

  • 3 large oranges

  • 4 red apples

Please buy these ingredients as organic! Soak your fruit and vegetables in a capful of apple cider vinegar for 10 minutes. Chop and juice your beet and allow it to sit on the counter for 20 minutes before juicing the rest of your ingredients. Beet juice becomes very beneficial after some of the natural enzymes begin to break down.

Peel your oranges. Because these are organic, you do not need to peel the rest of the ingredients. Chop your apples if your juicer requires it. Juice everything together and mix with your beet juice.

Please note: Your urine and poop might be red after drinking this drink. Have no fear, you are not bleeding internally. The coloring red of feces and urine is called beeturia. Your beneficial bacteria in your digestive system and stomach acid work to break down the pigment in foods like beets. If your urine and poop is colored pink or red, you know that you have low beneficial gut bacteria and weak stomach acid. A detox diet is exactly what you need!

Wide Eyed Wake Up

  • 6 ounces of fresh coconut water or spring water

  • Juice from 1 lemon

  • A 2” slice of aloe leaf with the skin cut off

  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey, Grade B Maple Syrup or a few fresh Stevia leaves

  • 1/8 teaspoon of fresh or dried lavender flowers

  • Mint for garnish.

Blend the water, lemon, aloe, sweetener, and lavender flowers together. Pour into a glass and garnish with mint. Allow the mint to steep for a few minutes. Drink this is the morning before eating.

Water Flush

  • Chill a small, personal watermelon (preferably WITH seeds)

  • Cut and remove the rind

  • a ¼ of a small handful of fresh basil leaves

  • ¼ of a small handful of fresh mint leaves

Blend the watermelon, seeds and all, with the basil and mint. Strain and drink or leave all the yummy pulp in your glass to drink. This detox drink will help to flush out excess water you may be carrying.

Agua Flush Deux

I am able to incorporate Spanish, English and French into this amazing cleansing drink!

  • 4 ounces of spring water

  • 6 ounces of unsweetened pure cranberry juice

  • 2 Tablespoon Lemon Juice

  • 1 Tablespoon of Bragg’s apple cider vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon of ground Ceylon Cinnamon

A few stevia leaves to sweeten if needed. I prefer not to add any sweetner to any of my drinks to maximize my detox. Blend everything together. This is also happens to be one of the best detox drinks for drug tests.

Green Eyed Beauty

  • 6 dinosaur kale leaves or 3 cups of baby kale

  • 3 cucumber

  • 2 stalks of celery

  • 6 cherry tomatoes

  • 1 small clove of garlic

  • ½ peeled lemon

  • optional: ¼ jalapeno de-seeded

Blend everything together and you can eat it like a blended salad or slightly (just slightly) warm it for a satisfying soup or add 6 ounces of spring water and strain through a nut bag or jelly strainer bags for a delicious veggie juice.

So there you have it, my favorite juices. When you add fresh juice to your daily life, you will find that you have more energy and a bounce to your step. You may even find that homemade detox drinks will replace your morning java.

Let me know if you have any juicing recipes that you absolutely love!
